FAQ

The Insurance, Financial and Actuarial Analysis (IFAA) Programme is an interdisciplinary business programme that combines actuarial science, insurance, finance, risk management, data analytics and business knowledge.

Students learn how to assess and manage financial risks using mathematical, statistical and analytical techniques. The curriculum covers areas such as probability, actuarial mathematics, statistics, investment analysis, insurance operations, financial markets, risk management and data modelling. In addition to technical training, students also develop communication, teamwork and business decision-making skills through projects, internships and industry engagement activities.

As part of the CUHK Business School, IFAA students benefit from a broad business education while receiving rigorous actuarial and quantitative training. Graduates are well prepared for careers in insurance, consulting, banking, asset management, risk management, financial services, data analytics and other quantitative professions.

While all three programmes emphasize quantitative skills and analytical thinking, they are designed for different career pathways.

The IFAA programme focuses on actuarial science, insurance, risk management and financial analytics. It is particularly suitable for students interested in becoming actuaries or pursuing careers in insurance, pensions, consulting, enterprise risk management and quantitative analysis.

The Quantitative Finance (QFIN) programme focuses more heavily on financial engineering, derivatives, investment analysis, asset pricing and quantitative trading, preparing students for careers in investment banking, asset management and financial markets.

The Risk Management Science (RMSC) programme places greater emphasis on statistical modelling, data science and risk analytics across a broad range of industries.

A distinctive advantage of IFAA is that it is recognised by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) as a Center of Actuarial Excellence (CAE), and selected courses are eligible for SOA University-Earned Credit (UEC), allowing qualified students to earn credits towards professional actuarial examinations while completing their degree.

The IFAA programme offers several unique advantages:

  • Society of Actuaries (SOA) Center of Actuarial Excellence (CAE) designation, the highest recognition granted by the SOA to actuarial programmes.
  • SOA University-Earned Credit (UEC) eligibility, allowing students who meet the required standards in approved courses to claim credits for selected SOA examinations.
  • A curriculum that integrates actuarial science, insurance, finance, risk management and data analytics.
  • Strong connections with leading insurance companies, consulting firms and financial institutions through internships, company visits, networking events and industry projects.
  • Opportunities to fulfil Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) requirements through CUHK courses.
  • Access to the resources, international network and multidisciplinary learning environment of CUHK Business School.

These advantages enable students to begin their professional qualification journey early and enhance their competitiveness in the global job market.

Yes. While actuarial science forms an important component of the curriculum, the IFAA programme is designed to prepare students for a wide range of careers across the insurance and financial services industries.

Students receive training in actuarial science, insurance, finance, investment analysis, data analytics, risk management and business fundamentals. This broad-based curriculum reflects the increasing demand for professionals who can analyze risks, interpret data and support business decision-making in a rapidly changing environment.

As a result, IFAA graduates pursue careers not only as actuaries, but also in insurance management, consulting, banking, investments, risk management, analytics and other quantitative business functions.

Modern actuarial practice requires much more than mathematical and statistical expertise. Actuaries are business professionals who help organizations identify, quantify and manage financial risks while supporting strategic decision-making.

Being housed within the CUHK Business School allows IFAA students to complement their quantitative training with knowledge of finance, accounting, economics, management and business strategy. This integrated approach reflects the realities of today’s insurance and financial services industries, where technical expertise must be combined with strong business understanding and communication skills.

The programme therefore equips students with both the quantitative foundation and business perspective expected of future industry leaders.

Actuaries are professionals who use mathematics, statistics, finance and data analytics to assess risks and support decision-making under uncertainty.

They help insurance companies, pension funds, consulting firms, financial institutions and corporations evaluate future financial obligations, design products, determine pricing strategies and manage risks. Actuaries play a key role in areas such as life and health insurance, general insurance, pensions, investments, enterprise risk management and predictive analytics.

As the volume of data and complexity of financial risks continue to increase, actuarial skills are becoming increasingly valuable in both traditional actuarial fields and emerging areas such as data science, artificial intelligence, sustainability and climate risk.

Students should have a strong interest in mathematics and analytical thinking, but success in IFAA depends not only on mathematical ability. Curiosity, problem-solving skills, communication skills and a willingness to learn are equally important. The programme is designed to help students gradually develop the quantitative and business skills required for actuarial and financial careers.

Many IFAA students complete several SOA associateship examination requirements and VEE requirements before graduation. In addition, selected courses are approved under the SOA University-Earned Credit (UEC) programme, allowing eligible students to earn credits for specific actuarial examinations by achieving the required academic performance.

IFAA graduates pursue careers in actuarial consulting, life and general insurance, reinsurance, pensions, risk management, banking, asset management, investments, data analytics, fintech and other quantitative business fields. The versatile skill set developed through the programme enables graduates to adapt to a wide range of industries and professional roles.

Yes. Many students gain practical industry experience through internships with insurance companies, consulting firms, financial institutions and other organisations. These opportunities allow students to apply classroom knowledge, develop professional skills and establish valuable industry connections before graduation.
